The word “erotica” sounds somewhat more intimate and subtle; it gives the impression that the erotic product range is suitable for everyone and is not intended solely for professionals in the field of sex.
Where did adult stores come from?
Sex is a natural part of life for the vast majority of people. People like to experiment, seek new stimuli, and enhance the intimate aspects of their lives. In the 1960s, social conventions loosened significantly; discussions about sex ceased to be taboo, and women’s emancipation made its mark even in the sexual sphere. With the advent of hormonal contraception, women could freely and unrestrictedly enjoy sex without fear of unwanted pregnancy.
The marital duty to procreate shifted to the realm of an intimate experience between partners; for some, sex became mere entertainment. People began seeking ways to revitalize sex, make it more enjoyable, and infuse it with more joy, playfulness, and passion. The emergence of sex shops was a logical outcome of the atmosphere of the time.
According to Wikipedia, the first sex shop opened in 1962 in Germany.
Since then, thousands of sex shops have opened around the world. Initially, these were traditional retail stores—so-called brick-and-mortar shops—with a somewhat unconventional product range. In our country, sex shops began to thrive in the 1990s. After the borders opened, our country became a destination for Western sex tourists, and sex shops popped up in every major city. After the initial euphoria, the market for erotic goods stabilized; sex shops underwent a shakeout, and only the competitive ones survived.
The current trend is online shopping
A significant milestone in the history of sex shops was the global spread of the internet. The development of the internet is changing people’s lives and behavior in a fundamentally significant way.
As recently as the late 20th century, internet access was the preserve of academic institutions or large corporations. Today, the internet is considered a standard feature of most households, just like television, radio, or a washing machine.
With the development and availability of smart technologies, consumer behavior is also changing. A major trend in recent years has been the rise of various e-shops, or online shopping. People buy practically everything online, from groceries and clothing to experiences, pet food, and building materials. Customers are primarily motivated to shop online by convenience and time savings.
Simply select the items, click them into the virtual cart, pay online with a card or from your account, and the purchase is complete. For a small fee or even free of charge, the goods are delivered right to the customer’s home.
An online sex shop is an e-shop selling erotic goods
If you’ve fallen in love with online shopping, you don’t have to give up your passion when choosing adult products. You don’t have to leave your home to make a purchase. From the comfort of your computer, tablet, or phone, you can browse the website of your favorite sex shop, select your items, pay by card or through your account, and then just wait for your order to be delivered.

In a brick-and-mortar store, you can usually pay for and take the merchandise right away, which is especially appreciated by less trusting customers who don’t like to pay in advance. However, it is precisely this personal approach that can be off-putting to some.

This discretion extends to shipping as well, so nothing on the package or box indicates the contents hidden inside.

You’ll likely choose an online sex shop if you’re the shy type, value your privacy, and don’t want to discuss your sex life with a salesperson. An indicator of an online store’s reliability is the option to pick up your order in person at a physical store. If the online store and the brick-and-mortar store are run by the same owner, the risk of not receiving your goods after payment is significantly lower than with anonymous online stores that have numerous grammatical errors on their Czech-language websites and whose country of origin is highly ambiguous.

They have a larger selection, focus mainly on branded items (including their own), and, unlike the competition, offer their own product photos. Sexshop.cz stands out with an extended 30-day return period. All products should be in stock, and you’ll appreciate the detailed information about materials, as well as fast and discreet delivery. However, the site isn’t mobile-friendly, so you can’t place an order over the phone. Another major drawback is the lack of original product photos.

Růžový slon is one of our favorite online adult stores—partly because they feature more explicit product videos, which are truly very illustrative, showing exactly how and where items can be inserted and used… Plus, they ship quickly and offer a selection of adult products that, while not massive, is carefully curated and hand-selected. Růžový slon is one of the best-known sex shops. They have their own warehouse, a wide selection, a fully responsive website, their own photos and videos for products, and the items are described in detail and with high quality. A more traditional sex shop that has been around for years. It offers a solid selection of vibrators, dildos, erotic lingerie, … but its design is a bit outdated, so you won’t enjoy browsing it much on tablets or phones. But shopping here is great, and just like with the others, you can expect fast and discreet shipping. Sexshopik.cz offers a large selection of in-stock items and fast delivery. Free returns are also a nice touch. A slight downside is the lack of original photos and the site’s lower clarity.

A newer player on the Czech market that won us over with its wide product range and a very well-designed and clean e-shop. It’s easy to navigate, we appreciate the filtering options, and they provide very detailed descriptions of all their products.

In addition to in-stock items and the option to order by phone, the warranty period extended to three years is a nice bonus. Sexicekshop.cz loses points for not having its own product photos.
Beate-uhse.cz
At this sex shop, you’ll appreciate the very wide selection and user-friendly search function. Minus points are for longer delivery times and the lack of Czech descriptions for some products.
Ltx.cz
This BDSM-focused sex shop has its own brick-and-mortar store in Prague, plenty of items in stock, a wide selection, and discreet delivery. A minor drawback is its lack of clarity.

In addition to its wide selection and modern design, this sex shop stands out for its video advice section. Fans of ordering by phone will be disappointed, as the website is not responsive.
