Buying your first vibrator doesn’t depend on whether you’re currently single or in a relationship. You can use a vibrator on your own during masturbation or as a pleasant way to spice up sex with a partner.
According to research, many women feel ashamed of masturbation. My personal advice is to forget about that right away! According to sexologists, masturbation is very beneficial. It relieves our bodies of stress and headaches, improves our mood, and makes us feel relaxed. During masturbation, breathing deepens, lung capacity increases, and the entire body is oxygenated. And most importantly, it will help you be better prepared for your first sexual experience with a male partner.
How to choose and buy your first vibrator?
Choosing your first vibrator isn’t always easy. There’s a wide range of different toys on the market today, so how do you choose the right one? Together with the girls from our naughty editorial team, we’ve put together a guide to choosing a vibrator. One that will help you decide at every step of the selection process so you can find your first little vibrator.
Step one: dildo or vibrator?
First, think about what you expect from your new companion. The difference between a dildo and a vibrator is that a dildo is merely an imitation of male penis without a motor or any electronics. It is also usually much more flexible and realistic than a vibrator.
In contrast, a vibrator is sturdier and contains an electric motor (which provides vibrations). The vibration intensity can be adjusted. When buying a vibrator, you need to consider whether you want a vaginal, anal, vaginal-anal, or a vibrator that stimulates the G-spot.
The classic dildo doesn’t really appeal to me that much; I don’t have any in my collection (and it’s quite extensive). However, for some people, it’s the best fit—it all comes down to individual taste and personal preferences and desires.
In any case, I can say one thing: with this little friend, I’m always guaranteed an orgasm. Yes, a guaranteed, certain, great orgasm. And that’s how it should be when using toys, because that’s what it’s all about—enjoying the play, preferably right to the very end…
On the other hand, I have to say that vibrators really spoil us girls, so for example, I personally have trouble reaching orgasm with a partner (during sex). You get used to the vibrations, speed, and instant adaptation to passion quickly, but it’s hard to break the habit. I can’t imagine having to get rid of all my toys—that would be the end of my sex life… (a bit of an exaggeration)
Step Two: Value for Money
If you decide to buy a vibrator, don’t try to skimp on the toy. Choose high-quality materials that will last for several years.
- Cheap vibrators are usually made of plastic. These vibrators are hard and noisy, but they transmit vibrations better and more intensely. However, a major disadvantage of plastic is that it cannot conform to the body. Plastic was among the first and most common materials used for battery-powered vibrators. You can use any type of lubricant with a plastic vibrator. But these toys won’t be enough for you + not all plastics on the market are safe and non-toxic… So this isn’t the way to go, even for your first choice..
- Another type of material for vibrators is gel/jelly. The upside is that these toys can come in almost any shape, size, and degree of curvature. Gel is flexible, soft, and pleasant, but again, they aren’t very safe; they may contain harmful phthalates and usually have an unpleasant odor. So it’s best to steer clear of them as well.
- You can also choose latex toys. Latex is a product made from natural rubber. These vibrators offer a soft surface and a realistic appearance. Latex appeared on the market several years after plastic.
- Another type of material used in the manufacture of vibrators is referred to as Pure Skin, Soft Touch, or Futurotic. This material realistically mimics human skin; it is very soft, smooth, and has the ability to adapt to your body temperature. At the same time, however, it is the most demanding to maintain.
- The final possible material is medical-grade silicone. This is a material also used in plastic surgery. It is very pleasant to the touch, safe for health, hypoallergenic, and odorless. As a result, it is also suitable for people with allergies.
Gel materials, Pure Skin, and medical-grade silicone are very sensitive to various lubricants. Therefore, it is important to ensure that only water-based lubricant is used. Other lubricants could damage the vibrator.
As for the material’s scent, every surface has its own distinctive odor. Currently, most products are pleasantly scented or completely odorless. Plastic vibrators have no smell, latex ones have a mild one, and silicone vibrators tend to have a scent. We’d rather not comment on gel toys here🙂
Step Three: Waterproof or Water-Resistant Vibrator?
Most of the more expensive vibrators are water-resistant. This means you can use the vibrator, for example, in the shower under running water, but you cannot submerge it in water. If you also want to use it during play in the bathtub, choose a waterproof vibrator.
A vibrator is considered truly waterproof if it can withstand water penetration when submerged to a depth of at least 1 meter. Such vibrators require a very fine thread, a double silicone seal, a tight fit, and all controls must be covered by membranes. If you are looking for a waterproof vibrator, be very careful when purchasing, because many products claim to be waterproof, but in most cases they are only water-resistant.
Step Four: Choosing the Type of Vibrator
Vibrators can be divided into many types, but as a basic classification, we can list vaginal, anal, and clitoral vibrators and their various combinations. Among the most popular are clitoral-vaginal vibrators, which offer simultaneous stimulation of both areas.
- Clitoral vibrators do not have phallic shapes. The latest vaginal vibrators are so discreet that you can carry them in your purse at all times without worry. With these vibrators, the smaller the vibrator, the weaker the vibration intensity and the higher the speed. There are handheld types, as well as vibrators placed directly in your underwear or even remote-controlled ones. Clitoral vibrators also include vibrating rings for your partner’s penis.
- Vaginal vibrators are usually shaped like a real penis or have a phallic form.
They are used vaginally or by placing them against the clitoris. A subgroup of vaginal vibrators are the so-called G-Spot types, which are used for G-spot stimulation. The shape of these vibrators is significantly curved at the end, which allows pressure to be applied to the upper vaginal wall behind the pubic bone. - Anal vibrators are exclusively designed for stimulation of the anal area. These vibrators feature a specific shape and a safety non-slip base. Anal vibrators have a vibrating motor located in the narrowest part (the so-called neck), because the area of the anal sphincter is most sensitive to vibrations.
- Vibrating eggs are also classified as vibrators. These are versatile vibrators that come with a wired remote control. There are also remote-controlled eggs that are suitable for the vaginal area and the smallest eggs for use even in panties.
- Pulsators are a specific type that many consider to be a type of vibrator, but this is not the case. Nevertheless, they can be a very interesting option even for beginners – but don’t expect a low price – pulsators usually cost around 3,000.
- Couples’ vibrators are very interesting because they allow for simultaneous stimulation with a toy and classic penile penetration — these vibrators are usually U-shaped, so when inserted into the vagina, they simultaneously stimulate the clitoris, the G-spot inside, and the penis, which can thrust freely inside.
Step Five: Choosing the Shape of the Vibrator
The original cigar-shaped vibrators with tapered ends have long been surpassed by modern and ever-new shapes. One trend is driven by modernization, while the other constantly strives to refine and improve stimulation.
TIP: Another important consideration is choosing the shape of the vibrator. For example, women with a small vagina or those suffering from yeast infections or burning sensations should avoid rough or jagged shapes. Conversely, women who have a looser vagina or lower sensitivity should choose from vibrators with various protrusions.
If you’re a complete beginner, it will probably take a while before you figure out which shape and material suits you best, but with time, you’ll get the hang of it and everything will go smoothly. And how can you actually make choosing a sex toy easier?
For beginners, I recommend a classic, natural shape rather than some geometric design or frilly nonsense, of which there are also plenty on the market, but those are really more for connoisseurs and those who know for sure that a particular shape works best for them, or for people who use these toys to spice up their bedroom fun—in which case, the effect (or climax) isn’t the main focus, but rather spicing up their love life.
Step Six: Choosing the Color of the Vibrator
An interesting color is often the first thing that catches a woman’s eye and intrigues her. You can choose vibrators in virtually any color you like. It all depends on your preference and what you like. Vibrators can also come with glitter or a glow-in-the-dark surface that glows in the dark.
Step Seven: Choosing the Size of the Vibrator
The standard and most common size is between 17 and 18 cm, with a diameter of around 3.5 cm. Vibrators that are over 20 cm long and have a diameter of 4 cm are among the larger ones, and the largest vibrators measure 30 cm in length and 6 cm in diameter. We refer to vibrators with a length of 15 cm and a diameter under 3 cm as small vibrators. There are also mini-vibrators with a diameter of around 0.7 cm and a length of 2.5 to 6 cm.
TIP: For women with a looser vagina, vibrators with a larger diameter or vibrating eggs are more suitable. Conversely, for young women who have not yet lost their virginity or do not have a very deep vagina, smaller vibrators are more suitable.
BONUS = Tip #1: Vibrator surface temperature
Surface temperature is a relatively important factor for sex toys. Plastic or metal materials tend to be cooler. On the other hand, latex and silicone vibrators tend to be warmer.
TIP: A very interesting and recently popular material is glass. Glass vibrators are usually well-shaped, smooth, and often difficult to identify as a sex toy at all. If you choose crystal glass, your vibrator will be perfectly transparent. A very interesting property is that glass has relatively high thermal inertia.
When using it, all you need to create a rush of blood to the pelvic floor area is a glass vibrator and two bowls of water—one warm and one cold. Now all you have to do is alternate between warm and cold water.
BONUS = Tip #2: Vibrator Hygiene
In general, hygiene is very important, so we shouldn’t underestimate it when it comes to our sex toys. Millions of bacteria can accumulate on every vibrator; while these may be harmless, they can turn into very dangerous substances when exposed to air and dust.
The risk is lower with smooth vibrators, but it is high with porous materials. Washing with warm water and soap is not 100% effective. It is advisable to visit a pharmacy and purchase a disinfectant there.
Apply the disinfectant to the vibrator before and after use; after application, rinse the vibrator with warm water and dry it. You can also find special vibrator care products in sex shops, but they are usually unnecessarily overpriced. If you own sex toys made of silicone and its compounds, choose an alcohol-free disinfectant.
BONUS = Tip Three: Choosing a Vibrator
You shouldn’t view a vibrator merely as a tool for satisfaction; keep in mind that not only its functionality but also its appearance is very important. The right vibrator should evoke exciting feelings in you the moment you look at it and hold it in your hand. The touch, sight, and scent of the vibrator should all evoke pleasant feelings in you.
Choose a toy that is pleasing to the eye and feels good to the touch. And don’t forget to consider the right specifications, water resistance, or vibrator type.
And that’s all, our loyal readers.

Good day,
I would like to buy a truly waterproof vaginal vibrator, one that would not be damaged by being submerged in the bath for a longer time. Could you please advise me? I’m a beginner.
Hi,
for the bath, don’t trust only the word “waterproof” on the box. Look specifically for IPX7 or submersible. IPX7 generally means the toy is safe for immersion in water for a limited time, while “splashproof” or “water-resistant” is more for rinsing or shower splashes, not lying in a bathtub with it. Some guides describe IPX7 as suitable for bath or shower play, while lower ratings are not meant for full submersion.
As a beginner, I’d choose something smaller, smooth, rechargeable, made from body-safe silicone, and not too sharply curved. You don’t need a huge “rabbit” or an intense toy right away. A slim waterproof insertable vibrator is usually the safest first step, because you can use it gently inside, but also externally on the clitoris if internal stimulation doesn’t feel right yet.
Brands like LELO and We-Vibe are usually reliable in this category. For example, LELO lists some of its toys as IPX7 waterproof and body-safe, and We-Vibe also sells waterproof rechargeable couple vibrators. But I’d still check the exact model before buying, because not every “waterproof” toy from every brand is equally suitable for longer bath use.
One practical detail: in water, lubricant washes away quickly. If you use the toy internally, don’t rely on bath water as lubrication. Use a small amount of water-based lube before getting in, and add more if needed. With silicone toys, be careful with silicone lubricant unless the manufacturer says it is safe.
So my simple beginner checklist would be: IPX7 or submersible, smooth silicone, rechargeable magnetic charging, not too large, easy buttons, and a shape that can be used both vaginally and externally. If you are unsure, I’d rather buy a quality smaller toy than a big complicated one that looks impressive but ends up uncomfortable.
